When discussing inspirational artists with my teacher last week, she recommended that I investigate an Australian artist called Ricky Swallow. So I made my way to the library and sure enough there was a book about his latest exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria which was titled ‘The Bricoleur’. The exhibition ran for several months over the summer of 2009/10, to which Ricky received rave reviews.
I really admire his work and the way in which he shapes and moulds natural materials with such precision and care. The respect I hold for this kind of sculpting is enormous. I imagine timber to be a very difficult material to sculpt on a large scale, especially when trying to achieve a sense of realism but Ricky has completely nailed it.
This is one of my favourite Ricky Swallow artworks titled ‘Killing Time’, which is owned by the art gallery of NSW.
